How to Build a Bicycle Rack for Pickup Trucks

Buying a bicycle rack for a truck can be expensive, and the majority of them are heavy to move and only work in the truck bed. You can easily make your own bicycle rack to transport up to 4 bicycles safely behind a pickup truck with PVC pipes and a little time, saving a lot of money. The rack also stands alone so that it can be used in the garage to surround the bicycle between trips.
The thing you need

Schedule of 40 inches 1 inch 40 PVC
9 90 degree elbow
26 connector T

PVC cement
Plastic spray paint

Step 1

Gather the supplies needed, which can be found at any home improvement or hardware store. The power miter saw is a good time saver, but hacksaw and a little elbow oil can also be used. You should also have sandpaper.

Step 2

Cut a PVC pipe with the following length: 8-18 1/2 inches 9-9 3/8 inches 8 - 8 1/2 inches 9-9 1/5 inches 12-1 1 3/4 inches

(This makes things easier if you set the block stops on the cutting measurements so that all parts are identical.) Wipe each end with a piece of sandpaper to remove the cutting grinder.

Step 3

Assemble six pipe sections with one T connector, one 18 1/2-inch section, followed by T connector, 9 1/2-inch section and another T connector. Assemble two end sections with the same pattern except hino dutro dealer use 90 degree elbows on each end. Place the parts in pairs as in the photo.

Step 4

Use 1 3/4-inch pieces to join in pairs and 9 3/8-inch pieces between each pair.

Step 5

Place the support piece pairs using 8 1/2-inch pieces as vertical topped with T connectors and the remaining 9 3/8-inch pieces as horizontal, again placing elbows 90 degrees at an angle.

Step 6

Connect the supporting structure to the main part. Work on a flat surface, adjust the fitting and set the correct angle for all elbows and T connectors.

Step 7

Try the bike rack on the pickup truck to make sure it fits before sticking. Remove each section one at a time and apply PVC cement around the tube before being put back in position. This glue sets up very quickly, so make sure you have the pieces at the right angle before putting them together.

Step 8

Although it's not absolutely necessary, you should spray PVC paint to protect it from sun damage that causes it to brittle. When it's completely dry, adjust the bicycle rack on the back of the truck and hino dutro dump truck fasten it to the bed hook with a bungee strap.

Step 9

To set the bike in place, push the tire forward between the narrow PVC. Secure the bike to the bicycle rack by running the bungee strap from the handle bar to the rack. You can drill a hole in the pipe to attach the hook, or just wrap the cable around the pipe.
